A recent audit of the IRS<\/span><\/a>
\nrevealed some very disturbing information regarding tax refunds this past
\nyear. <\/span>It appears there was around 4
\nbillion dollars fraudulently refunded to identity thieves. <\/span>Some of the mistakes in processing make
\nyou really call into question the common sense of the IRS. <\/span>For example, there were over 655
\nrefunds that were sent to the same address in Lithuania. <\/span>The report went on to explain that
\nthere were 1.1 million refunds that were sent to individuals who used stolen
\nSocial Security numbers. <\/span>The
\naverage time it took to correctly remedy the stolen SSN predicament was over 10
\nmonths. <\/span>All in all, the fraud cost
\ntaxpayers around $3.6 billion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously, there is a
\nproblem. <\/span>In defense of the IRS,
\nthey are trying to take the right steps to remedy this issue. They now have
\nover 3,000 employers working specifically on the issue of identity theft compared
\nto 1,500 previously. They are also deploying some new screening filters.<\/span><\/p>\n

I commend the IRS for
\ntaking some steps in the right direction, but Im curious as to why they are so
\nlax in the verification process. There should be more regulations passed down
\nto the tax preparation companies and CPAs. If there is a known issue with SSN
\nfraud, why dont they require <\/span>SSN verification<\/span><\/a> and some type of authentication process, such as Knowledge
\nBased Authentication with electronic filing? <\/span>I know that sometimes problems are more complex than they
\nappear, but in this case, deploying some type of <\/span>identity and authentication system<\/span><\/a> seems like the simple solution. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There are many different
\nverification processes to assist with these issues. Whether its drivers
\nlicense verification or SSN verification, the IRS should be more proactive with
\nimplementing stronger measures to protect citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n
