As part of the Government Accountability Office, the Federal
\nInformation Security Management Act of 2002 (FISMA) established an information
\nsecurity program, which evaluates and provides annual reporting for federal
\nagencies. The most recent study was released, Weaknesses Continue Amid New
\nFederal Efforts to Implement Requirements<\/a>, and reports that security
\nincidents from federal agencies have increased 650% in the past five years.<\/p>\n

Twenty-four agencies were reviewed, and each agency had
\nweaknesses in information security controls. The report states that one of the
\nreasons for these
fraud prevention<\/a>
\nweaknesses have occurred is because the agencies have not fully implemented
\ntheir information security programs and
fraud prevention
\ntools<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is suspected that the increase of information security
\nweaknesses coincides with many agencies transferring data online for easier
\naccess, especially between agencies. This action has created an opportunity to potentially
\nexpose sensitive information.<\/p>\n

Agencies have not fully implemented their information
\nsecurity programs, Gregory Wilshusen, GAO director of information security
\nissues. As a result, they have limited assurance that controls are in place
\nand operating as intended to protect their information resources, thereby
\nleaving them vulnerable to attack or compromise.<\/p>\n
