{"id":4787,"date":"2014-09-15T16:09:41","date_gmt":"2014-09-15T16:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/evssolutions.com\/legislation-introduced-to-remove-social-security-number-from-medicare-cards\/"},"modified":"2023-04-19T18:53:30","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T18:53:30","slug":"legislation-introduced-to-remove-social-security-number-from-medicare-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/evssolutions.com\/insights\/legislation-introduced-to-remove-social-security-number-from-medicare-cards\/","title":{"rendered":"Legislation Introduced to Remove Social Security Number from Medicare Cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/legislation\/legis_bulletin_121810.html\">Social Security Number Protection Act<\/a>, which was signed by President Barack Obama in December 2010, Prohibits federal, state, or local agencies from: (1) displaying the Social Security account number of any individual, or any derivative of such number, on any check issued for any payment by the agency; or (2) employing, or entering into a contract for the use or employment of, prisoners in any capacity that would allow them access to the Social Security account numbers of other individuals.<\/p>\n<p>However, legislation was introduced in July seeking to prohibit display of Social Security numbers on Medicare cards.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 33 states bar the use of Social Security numbers on health insurance cards.<\/p>\n<p>Social Security numbers are valuable to identity thieves because they help them side step one part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/electronicverificationsystems.com\/\">id verification<\/a> process.
